16 March, 2016 - 10 October, 2016
MNCARS, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid

The retrospective devoted to Ulises Carrión (San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz, Mexico, 1941–Amsterdam, 1989) by the Museo Reina Sofía explores his multifaceted artistic and intellectual work. It spans his early days as a young, successful and well-respected writer in Mexico, his spells in France, Germany and England between 1964 and 1972—where he honed his resolve to innovate in language—up to his definitive move to Amsterdam, where he undertook a wide range of artistic, literary and cultural activation activities. Through 350 pieces, produced in diverse mediums—books, magazines, videos, films, sound pieces, mail art, multimedia and performances, among others—in addition to a large number of projects in which Carrión took on the role of curator, editor, distributor, television and radio activist, speaker and writer, the show traces the unique path of an artist who worked tirelessly to construct a network of networks on the fringes of established circuits. Of particular importance is the section devoted to his role as founder of the mythical bookshop/gallery Other Books And So, the first to specialise in artist’s publications and books.
