The exhibition examines the connections between the visual arts, writing and popular music in Spain from 1950 to 1978, placing special emphasis on the close ties that said practices had with the political, social and counterculture movements that were evolving at the time.

Directly and indirectly, popular culture—particularly that associated with music—became in no small part a tool of non-violent opposition to the Franco regime, as it responded to the desire to build a cultural identity different to that which was promoted institutionally.

Between 1950 and 1978 many creators (painters, writers, filmmakers, dramatists, etc.), fascinated by their aesthetic and subversive potential, integrated elements that are related, either directly or indirectly, with the behaviour, attitude and iconography of popular music into their cultural practice, contributing to shattering the foundations of an already fractured Spanish society.

This first retrospective dedicated to the artist presents his oeuvre from the early stages of his career as a member of the group Zaj to his later years. The objective is two-fold: to reconsider a response to his work and to prepare the way for a historical assessment of it. Such an¬ appraisal is an essential contribution to the history—as yet only partially written—of experimental writing, and of other associated artistic practices in Spain.
