EXHIBITIONS / Rafael Gutiérrez-Colomer and his Time. Art, Culture and Society in Cantabria (1968–1985)

Obra Social de la Caja de Ahorros de Santander y Cantabria, (CASyC), Santander
Curated:
José María Lafuente, Luis Alberto Salcines

This exhibition—and the subsequent publication—illustrated part of the cultural production in Cantabria during a period of profound social, political and cultural change in which, as in the rest of Spain, a passion for modernisation came up against an entrenched apathy dating back to the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. The addition to the Lafuente Archive of the documentary legacy of the Santander-born architect and experimental poet Rafael Gutiérrez-Colomer Velasco (Santander, 1927–Madrid, 2005) became the basis for documenting and presenting to the public the cultural life of the period; a time in which Gutiérrez-Colomer was a driving force in Santander’s cultural scene until he left Cantabria in the latter half of the eighties to take up permanent residence in Madrid, where he would live out the rest of his years.
