Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) had two apparently contradictory passions: typography and collage. Typography led him to the field of graphic design, in which order and legibility are the norm, whereas in collage, everything seems to emerge spontaneously, unexpectedly, by chance, to the extent that its dominant perceptive mechanism—one that is indeed sometimes abused—is surprise.
