Whitechapel Gallery, in one of its most important exhibitions to date, traces a century of abstract art from 1915 to the present day, featuring works by over 100 artists, such as Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, Gabriel Orozco, Rosemarie Trockel, Andrea Zittel, David Batchelor, Hélio Oiticica and Andrea Fraser. The exhibition takes a fresh look at this new art form, which emerged in a period of change and asks how it relates within its political and social context.
The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, recordings and photography spanning a whole century. It gathers works from international collections including those of Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Costakis Collection in Thessaloniki, Tate London, Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Lafuente Archive. The latter makes an important contribution with over 70 pieces, among them are works by artists such as Kazimir Malevich, Nikolai Punin, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy and Dieter Roth, as well as artists from the Czech Republic, Germany, Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, Italy, Austria, France, the UK, Georgia, Japan and Argentina.
This show includes an extensive collection of photographic documentation from important exhibitions in the history of abstraction and a selection of magazines conveying revolutionary ideas in art and society through typography and graphic design. The Lafuente Archive lends over 50 issues of publications such as Blok, Secession, Cercle et Carré, Wendingen, Broom, Réalités Nouvelles, Arte Madí Universal, Arte Concreta, Blast, Het Overzicht and Spirale.
