A self-taught artist working with a range of mediums, since 1968 Vázquez has participated in some 400 individual and group exhibitions held in galleries, art centres, museums, foundations and art fairs in Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, England, Germany, Poland, Japan, Australia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile. His work is found in national and international collections and museums, such as Collection Dobe (Zurich), Musée Cantini (Marseille), Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Compostela), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Fondation Collage (Paris), Fundación ‘la Caixa’ (Barcelona), Artium (Vitoria), the European Investment Bank (Luxembourg) and IVAM (Valencia), among others.

The founder and a member of the editorial board of the magazine Comercial de la Pintura, Vázquez is also the author of the artist books and collections of poems such as Desexo e norte (1977), Para el ojo (1981), Mitad del gozne (1991, 1997) and Sicut (1981) (the last includes his own engravings and poems by Pessoa). In 2009, the Fundación Luis Seoane (La Coruña) released his film Tempo trenzado, as well as publishing the catalogue of the exhibition «Neve negra».

He has conducted art workshops for the University of La Laguna and for the Cultural Centre of Ourense Provincial Council and has participated in art courses at institutions such as Arteleku (San Sebastián), Centro de Arte La Recova (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) and the Casa das Artes (Vigo), and at universities in Cantabria and Castile–La Mancha and at Complutense University of Madrid.

The Xesús Vázquez collection is composed of photographs, catalogues, designs, invitations, pamphlets, posters, cards, artist books, audiovisual material and original work by Vázquez himself and by other artists.
