This exhibition – and the subsequent publication – illustrated part of the cultural production in Cantabria during a period of profound social, political and cultural change in which, as in the rest of Spain, passion for modernization came up against an entrenched apathy dating back to post-war years. The addition to the Lafuente Archive of the documentary legacy left by Santander architect and experimental poet Rafael Gutiérrez-Colomer Velasco (Santander, 1927 – Madrid, 2005) became the basis for documenting and presenting to the public the cultural life in Santander during this period. It was a time when Gutiérrez-Colomer was a driving force in the city’s cultural scene, a role he played up to his departure from Cantabria in the second half of the 1980s to take up permanent residence in Madrid, where he would live out the rest of his years.
