José María Lafuente, Salvador Carretero Rebés
The facet of the Cantabrian poet Julio Maruri (Santander, 1920) as a painter was relatively unknown in his native land. Recovering and disseminating the depth and scope of his career in the visual arts was the aim of the exhibition that bore his name. The selection of his paintings on display in the former Fine Arts Museum of Santander (now the Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria [MAS]) was complemented with diverse documentation on his life provided by the Lafuente Archive and exhibited in a separate venue: the city’s Mercado del Este. Prior to the painting exhibition, the Lafuente Archive carried out a painstaking inventory and cataloging process of Maruri’s work in France, the country in which the painter and poet spent a part of his life and where a good deal of his works are to be found in museums and private collections.
