Books Beyond Artists: Words and Images
Elena Ochoa Foster
Books Beyond Artist shows book-objects or very limited editions made by artists as Paul McCarthy or Anselm Kiefer that will coexist with pictorial and sculptural books where text is minimum or it does not even exist. Those works lend the entire importance to the image, the sculpture or the painting.
The exhibition will include editions by Francisco de Goya, William Kentridge or Anthony Caro, among others. Books Beyond Artist will also show artists’ books made by contemporary leading figures as Louise Bourgeois or Damien Hirst. In some of them, the centre of attention is the design and the chosen materials: from the folding of the paper in books by Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Lucio Fontana or Hiroshi Sugimoto, until the use of natural materials like in Richard Long’s one. In others, however, the book is the vehicle to express a protest or it is used as a manifesto, as in the works by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Santiago Sierra or Martin Parr. The exhibition includes books by Jenny Holzer and Isidoro Valcárcel Medina where word is the only subject.
